Midnight & Noon travels again

We had a new adventure recently when we went to see Midnight & Noon on display in the 42nd New Legacies: Contemporary Art Quilts at the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins Colorado. 

This is the third show that has accepted my quilt. Each time I get to see it displayed, I am impressed with how the curators have given it space to be seen from both sides. In this case it is featured in the front window of the gallery!

The really cool thing about this venue is that it is located in the lobby of a performing arts center. Not only is it open to the public during the week, but people will be able to see the show during performances at the Lincoln Center.

Since the mission of New Legacies is to feature innovation and "material exploration" by artists working in textile art, this is an opportunity to expand the public's concept of the modern quilt. 

It's an honor to be included with so many creative artists in this special exhibit.


Under the auspices of the city of Fort Collins, the Lincoln Center puts out a catalogue. It's a a snap shot in time and a great sampling of some of the innovative, inspiring work that is currently being done in this medium. So many voices, creating such interesting work. (The bar is pretty high, so it was especially meaningful to be acknowledged with an Honorable Mention.)

Introducing: Balance of Light & Dark

  Balance of Light & Dark In this composition the image area has been roughly divided in half vertically. The dark contours on the right have been repeated in the light color and reoriented on the left, creating a tension between light and dark shapes. The quilting for this piece, continues my experimentation with textures to enhance the project’s design. Gentle arches and a subtle, directional flow in the background quilting provides some motion across the surface. For a contrast, the traditional treatment of echo quilting the shapes gives them a more solid, steady feeling, even as they are stacked and precariously rest on thin lines. So, we have a balance between light and dark, solid shapes and graceful line, movement and stability. Gifted Baby Quilt

This crib quilt was gifted recently to expecting parents who are well traveled and adventurous. Our family has enjoyed following their world travels for many years, so I couldn't think of a more appropriate pattern than "Trip Around the World," -  with a slight modern twist, of course. It was especially meaningful since the baby shower theme was "Adventure."  Usually this pattern would be centered and the concentric rows that create a diamond shape would extend to the edge. Here I have moved the shape off center and dropped out some of the rows. I was so pleased to find some blender fabrics in my stash that give the effect of a dissolving edge. Love the texture that emerged in the background. Even the quilting on this is the "Meandering" pattern. Most of my quilts are done by hand now, but given the wear and tear of a baby quilt, I chose to go back to my sewing machine. It has been a while since I've made a quilt by machine, start to finish.
