100 Day Challenge: Week 2

Just finishing the second week of Ventura Modern Quilt Guild's 100 day challenge!

Guild members are choosing their own project(s) to work on at least five minutes a day for 100 days. To be honest my biggest hurdle so far was deciding what I wanted to tackle. So many possibilities!!

But I did need to take into account scheduled events in the coming weeks. A portable reverse appliqué and hand quilting project is perfect for those occasions when you'll be separated from the sewing machine for awhile. Fortuitous, since I already had an idea for a new quilt in my "Q is for Quilt" series.

The first step was to transfer that idea to the background fabric using heat erasable fabric markers, and to baste it to my second fabric.

Then it was ready for reverse appliqué. Folding under along the drawn line, the top fabric is sewn in place to reveal the color underneath.

I'm not sure if I'm getting faster at working by hand, or if this particular design is not as elaborate as the first two, but this project is moving along at a good clip, (pardon the pun.)

All of my contours were finished this week.

The view from the wrong side of this quilt top is shown below. On the left, you can see my basting stitches next to the very small appliqué stitching. The basting stitches needed to be taken out and the extra pink fabric, which adds bulk and is covered by the green when seen from the right side, needed to be cut away from the back.

When all the excess fabric was carefully removed, the top was sandwiched with batting and a backing fabric. With all the layers in place, (and secured with safety pins to ensure they don't shift), the quilt was put in a hoop for the hand quilting stage.

This piece will have lots of texture from the quilting, so it may take longer than the appliqué stage. It certainly won't take me through the 100 days though, . . . Hmmm. I do have another idea on the back burner.

Hey! I think I've decided on my goal for this guild challenge. I'm going to see how much quilting I can get done in 100 days.
