Henry James was a prolific writer, held in high esteem as one of the great novelists of the English language. Also a prominent literary figure of the early 20th century, Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Literature. They struck up a long friendship which began through correspondence initiated by Wharton,- a flash back to the time when letter writing was an art in itself!
