Quilting Group Challenge
A couple of Christmases ago, I gave my quilt buddies, Sara and Erin, a length of fabric and challenged our little group to use it in the new year. It was a horizontally striped cotton in a nontraditional color palette:
Erin finished first. Her creations feature our "inspiration fabric" in the snowman's quilt. She stretched her work on a canvas frame for each of us, so we have a piece of her folk art to hang during the season.
Sara used the "inspiration fabric" to create a striped border around a log cabin square for a small wall hanging. The center square is a Christmas stocking print and the strips around it pick up the subtle colors from the details in our fabric. These nontraditional Christmas colors give her piece a light and airy, happy feeling.
Ironically, I was the last to come up with a project. I show it to you with a small confession- this is only the top, it still needs to be quilted....embarrassing.
In full disclosure, I went back and purchased extra fabric to make a lap sized quilt. I chose red and green fabrics in the tones of the "inspiration fabric".
The center panel was created by fussy cutting right triangles and joining them at the stripes- you can see the same effect in Sara's border. This technique was also done with equilateral triangles for my border; joining 3 triangles to create half of a hexagon. Strung together, the half hexagons created a scalloped edge.
Next I played with the background behind the scalloped border. In the end I opted for a solid red to give it some life.
The next step will be to decide the quilting which will complement the layout of this quilt... more work ahead.
